Managing networks effectively means having up-to-date information about devices and hosts, at your fingertips. SNMP is one way to get that data, being widely supported across hardware platforms. In this talk we'll give an introduction to SNMP and then use free-software tools to demonstrate its features. Tasks include: locating a system on your network by MAC or IP, showing the port it lives at; turning on and off switch ports or changing the VLAN; inventory hardware by model and OS; and drawing pretty pictures of your network.
